Donald Runnicles is to all intents and purposes a German conductor! He trained at Edinburgh University, Cambridge and the London Opera Studio. All his early conducting was in Germany particularly in Mannheim and Freiburg. In 1992, before working at all in the UK. His stellar career took off when he was appointed Music Director of San Francisco Opera. Only then did he make his UK conducting debut with the SCO at the Edinburgh International Festival. His long association there led to him becoming music director of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in which capacity he frequently visited Perth Concert Hall. His first love is Opera and since 2009 he has been Generalmusikdirector of Deutsche Oper Berlin. One of the last things he did in Scotland was a fabulous performance of Bruckner 8. His Wagner is also to die for.
