Day 73 - Isolation Blues - Ian McLaren
An utterly charming new song inspired by the times we're living through from Perth songwriter Ian McLaren.
Ian is a weel-kent face and much-loved voice on Perthshire's live music scene and has been writing songs for many years, principally for the band he fronts as lead vocalist, Wang Dang Delta.
Over the last two years, family circumstances have seen Ian focus more on songwriting. Many of the musical friendships he forged over many years at his beloved Southern Fried festival have flourished at the fortnightly Butterstone Acoustic Music nights hosted by Dougie MacLean and Wang Dang Delta compadre Pete Caban, which have proved to be a great space for artists to try out new material.
When lockdown started, the challenge became to continue these collaborations remotely using online channels:
“Lockdown inspired a creative burst which resulted in writing and recording a series of tunes. Isolation Blues was one of the early pieces I wrote, and I shared it with musical friends through a weekly Zoom catch-up.
I was overjoyed when fellow Butterstone regular, guitarist Stuart Nisbet asked if he could put together a properly recorded version, using mutual musical associates. Stuart saw the song as a perfect run-out for his new Fender Stringmaster steel guitar. Soon, Alan Sutherland had been imposed upon to provide piano and bass guitar and we were on our way. To top it off Stuart enlisted the help of London-based drummer Sian Monaghan, the Americana Music Association UK Instrumentalist of the Year 2019.
So there we have it. Four locked-down musicians, never in the same room at the same time, conspire to deliver the Isolation Blues."
