Day 491 - It is all Henry VIII's fault - The Lammermuir Festival

Updated: Jul 26

The rough wooing was a period of bullying of Scotland by England and one of its major events was the Siege of Haddington which led to the destruction of St Mary's Collegiate Church. Half of the church was rebuilt and wall built down the middle. John Knox was the first minister. It stayed half church and half ruin until 1967 when the Duchess of Hamilton and Yehudi Menuhin got together to begin to raise the funds to finish the rebuild - starting with Menuhin playing Bach in the ruins. The money was raised through classical concerts presented by the Lamp of Lothian Trust who in 2010 founded The Lammermuir Festival. Running every September it is now one of the most significant classical festivals in the UK. It won the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Festivals and Concert Series in 2017 - the classical oscars! And it is about to launch its 2021 series of 37 concerts on Tuesday at 10am.

Artists include American pianist Jeremy Denk, Navarra and Maxwell Quartets, Tenebrae, Gesualdo Six and much else.
