Stravinsky Firebird Suite (LSO/Abbado)
Pärt Tabula Rasa (Shaham/GSO/Järvi)
Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances (Concertgebouw/Ashkenazy)
Claudio Abbado’s period with the LSO was a fabulous time for music in London and Firebird shows this wonderful partnership off at its finest. Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances is gloriously romantic and who better to preside than perhaps the greatest Russian musician of his generation Vladimir Ashkenazy. The music of Arvo Pärt is always haunting and is the perfect meat in this Russian musical sandwich.
