Day 472 - Martin Taylor & Alison Burns: J'Attendrai
Although they both live in Perthshire these days, revered jazz guitarist Martin Taylor and vocalist Alison Burns enjoy a well-earned worldwide reputation for excellence. This lovely song is a great taster for their performance of songs from the Roaring 20's at Live & Unlocked on Perth Concert Hall Plaza on Mon 2nd August.
The year was 1921. The world was recovering from the First World War and the Spanish Flu pandemic. As people came together again, so began the start of what we now know as the Roaring 20's, a remarkable period in history that saw one of the greatest flourishings of music, art, literature, and architecture. People socialising and audiences filling theatres again were a “symbol of returning to life”.
To mark 100 years of the "first jazz age", multi-award-winning guitarist Martin Taylor MBE and Scottish-Canadian jazz singer Alison Burns embark on their first duo tour in five years to present a concert of jazz songs from the Roaring 20's by composers including Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, Irving Berlin and George and Ira Gershwin. Tuxedos and fascinators are optional for this evening of uplifting jazz!
“No matter how complex or daring, Taylor’s interpretation never shortchanges the melodies; indeed, his remarkably fluid touch imbues a seamless beauty. Taylor is something to behold.” Washington Post
“She has the ability, rare in all but the best jazz singers, to make even the most frequently heard, over-recorded standards sound fresh and interesting.” Jazz Journal
“Burns’s voice strikes the right balance between sensitivity and power.” HMV Choice
“Fantastic..superb…outstanding.” ABC Australia
