Scotland has for many years had an established festival sequence. Beginning with our own Perth it has segued into St Magnus, East Neuk, Edinburgh and then Lammermuir. Recently another one has become a serious player - Paxton. Based around a beautiful house near the Tweed outside Berwick the festival was for some years a short series of good but low profile chamber music. A couple of years ago Angus Smith who as well as programming music in Sheffield is a tenor in the renowned Orlando Consort took over the planning and it has taken off like a rocket. Artists this year include Steven Osborne, Imogen Cooper, the Gould Piano Trio and the Maxwell String Quartet, a list as good as you will find anywhere. The setting is gorgeous and they were the first festival in Scotland this year to announce live events which entitles them to considerable respect. The festival is run with a professionalism which belies its size. Seats are strictly limited this year, but some of the programme will be available online and you should put the 2022 dates in your diary. Class act!
