Day 443 - Edinburgh International Festival 2021
Updated: Jun 7
There is a saying about running festivals that the riskiest thing you can do is to take no risks as festivals thrive on buzz. However running the Edinburgh International Festival in 2021 requires an appetite for risk which would send any actuary into a decline. But Fergus Linehan has risen to the challenge. He has literally built a new festival. Confronted by restrictions which make the 6 key festival venues (Festival Theatre, King's, Lyceum, Queen's Hall, Usher Hall and Playhouse) hugely restricted he has simply built three new ones. One in the Edinburgh University Quad to replace the Queen's Hall, a large performance space at the Edinburgh Academy Preparatory School for orchestras and a stage for contemporary music at Edinburgh Park. Launched last Wednesday the programme is substantial with major classical names including Simon Rattle and Renée Fleming as well as opera performances by Scottish Opera and the Dunedin Consort. They deserve every plaudit they get, because this is as brave as could be.
