Day 440 - Smith and McClennan: Firefly
One of Scotland's very finest vocalists, Emily Smith sings Firefly, accompanied by the song's writer Jamie McClennan. It's a great example of their highly distinctive blend of folk, bluegrass and Americana and was filmed by TradTV at Showcase Scotland Expo's music industry event The Visit in Perth Theatre's Joan Knight Studio in Sep 2018.
Award-winning Scottish singer Emily Smith and New Zealand born songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jamie McClennan have worked together for almost twenty years. With sublime double vocals, guitars, accordion and viola their music draws influences from folk, Americana and beyond.
Having released eight albums of mainly trad/folk music under Emily’s name with Jamie in both a performing and producing role, their new project Smith and McClennan sees them come together as a duo. Their most recent album Small Town Stories (released in Nov 2019) features original material (written by McClennan) drawing inspiration from their shared life experience as touring musicians and in recent years, becoming parents together. Performed with heart and consummate craft the result is an intimate, accessible and ultimately uplifting album. Smith’s accolades include BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician of the year, two BBC Radio 2 folk award nominations and twice winner of Scots Singer of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards.
They have toured throughout Europe, North America, Russia, Japan and Australasia and along the way have collaborated with many musical greats including Richard Thompson, Barbara Dickson and Jerry Douglas. TV and radio appearances include Transatlantic Sessions, BBC Songs of Praise, BBC Radio 2's Good Morning Sunday, The Folk Show and Bob Harris Show.
