Day 424: Get creative in your own home

The past year has seen us find lots of different ways of working. While our venues have been closed, the Learning and Engagement team has been finding new ways for people to actively engage in theatre, music and dance. We've run projects such as Let's Dance, Virtual Voices, Glee and The Gordon Duncan Experience online, created performances with Perth Youth Theatre over Zoom, beamed Little Stars into nurseries via Teams, toured live music to care homes on our Gig on a Truck stage, and we're working towards an outdoor production with Perth Youth Theatre this summer.

Our newest projects, Lost Railways: Our Memories and McDiarmid Memories, take a new form. We've worked with Illustrator Laura Darling to create two activity packs designed to enable people to get creative remotely. The packs offer step by step guides to simple creative exercises that focus on stimulating memories.

Lost Railways: Our Memories explores Perth and Kinross' disused railway lines. If you remember travelling on one of the following lines, or any other routes that are no longer in use, then we'd love you to take part:

  • The Caledonian Strathearn branch lines including the Crieff and Methven Junctions Railway, Perth Almond Valley and Methven Railway, Crieff Junction Railway.

  • The North British lines to the south of Perth including the Glenfarg, Kinross and Devon Valley lines.

  • The Strathmore route from Stanley junction to Coupar Angus, and the Alyth and Blairgowrie branch lines.

The creative activity packs will be delivered to your home, you can do the activities alone or with a friend or family member, and once you've completed the pack a member of the Learning and Engagement Team will meet you outdoors to audio record your memories. These audio recordings will then be shared with Culture Perth and Kinross; some may be included in the All Aboard - the Railways of Perth and Kinross exhibition, and all will be added to their archive.

McDiarmid Memories is part of our Saintees on Stage project. This creative pack has been created especially for use in care homes, and will support Activities Coordinators to run reminiscence activities around St Johnstone Football Club.

All the materials you need to support the activities are included in the packs, and there are even snacks inside too!

If either of these projects sound like they might be of interest to you, get in touch with before 31 May, and look out for a sneaky peek of some of the brilliant illustrations included in the pack on our social media over the coming weeks.
