Day 356 - Just Because I'm A Woman

In the week that International Women's Day falls, it seems appropriate to revisit the finale of our Because We're Women: The Songs Of Dolly Parton show from Southern Fried Festival 2015.

The international cast of artists from the USA, Canada, Scotland and England included Della Mae, Meaghan Blanchard, Samantha Crain, Amythyst Kiah, the McCrary Sisters, Lisa Mills and Yola.

"Dolly Parton is quite simply one of the greatest songwriters of all time - regardless of gender or genre.

The glitz, the wigs, the glamour and her larger-than life persona can sometimes serve to overshadow the fact that she is the author of over 3000 songs and countless hits including Jolene, Coat Of Many Colours, I Will Always Love You, Love Is Like A Butterfly, 9 To 5, The Bargain Store, Two Doors Down, Because I’m A Woman and My Tennessee Mountain Home.

In Because We’re Women, an exceptional group of 16 singers and musicians led by the brilliant band Della Mae come together to celebrate the many, many splendours of Parton’s songbook. A glorious diversity of artists whose backgrounds are in gospel, soul, blues, indie rock, bluegrass, dance music, country and folk and who are collectively of African American, Scottish, British Caribbean, Canadian and Native American descent perfectly illustrates the universal appeal and creative brilliance of Dolly Parton’s words and music. Together, they celebrate it joyously in this unique and uplifting show. "
