Day 348 - Isata Kanneh-Mason - a star in her own right.
It is very easy for one celebrated sibling to keep the remainder of the family in the shade. This might very well have been the case for the relatives of Sheku Kanneh-Mason who achieved world stardom first by winning BBC Young Musician of the Year and then performing at Meghan and Harry's Wedding. But what of pianist Isata his elder sister? In any other family she would have been a star. She too was a BBC Young Musician finalist and a fabulous pianist in her own right. She first began to be noticed as a chamber music partner for Sheku - they are sensational together as anyone who saw their Prom last year would attest. But gradually she has developed a solo career of her own at the highest level including performances at the Portland Piano Series in Oregon, the Barbican Centre’s Sound Unbound festival, The Color of Music Festival in South Carolina, and at the Edinburgh, Cheltenham, and Bath festivals, as well as with our own BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra during lockdown. She has capped it off with a debut Album for Decca. We in Perth were early adopters, with a delightful recital in April 2019 as part of Perth Piano Sundays. She was supposed to be back with us this May - but watch this space - all may not be lost ... !
