One of the few bits of normality through this concertless winter has been the regular opportunities to watch and listen to the RSNO performing from their own centre in Glasgow. When the new RSNO centre was designed and built with full digital rig no-one can have foreseen quite how soon it would be integral to the orchestra's output. The new season is full of delights. It includes Nicola Benedetti performing both Szymanowski violin concerti in two concerts accompanied by
Thomas Søndergård and Elim Chan, the RSNO's Music Director and Principal Guest Conductor respectively. Another finalist from BBC Young Musician 2004, pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, performs Chopin and there are performances of both Barber and Schumann 2. Also there a series of beautifully programmed chamber programmes with guest artists such as Paul Lewis. I really hope that this is the last time I have to write about one of our orchestras launching a digital season, but we have to be very grateful indeed to the RSNO for keeping that concert season feeling alive.
