Day 299 - Mark Morris - Choreographer and Classical Music Obsessive

Of today's dance-makers Mark Morris is unique for his ability to get inside great classical scores and create dance works which work in cohesive partnership with the music to create completely integrated masterpieces. His early triumphs included Purcell's 'Dido and Aeneas' and the unforgettable 'L' Allegro' to Handel's sublime oratorio. One of his less know works is Jesu meine Freude where dancers form in 5 part contrapuntal movement matching Bach's music.

He created the choreography for the original production of John Adams's Nixon in China directed by Peter Sellars. As well as working in contemporary choreography Mark has made classical ballets for American Dance Theatre and San Francisco Ballet

In fact what he wants to do more than anything is to develop a conducting career! He has conducted the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Baroque and the Brooklyn Philharmonic.
