Day 274 - Velvet Sessions Livestream: Craigie Knowes, Groovement, Voyage & DJCJ

With the help of a brilliant linupe of local electronic talent - Craigie Knowes, Groovement, Voyage and DJCJ - The Velvet Lounge & Studio announce the second edition of their livestream series for at-home ravers, Velvet Sessions on December 19th running from 6pm til late. All in aid of raising funds for local charities; The Lighthouse For Perth and Perth and Kinross Foodbank. Donations can be made here.

After the success of the debut livestream event back in August, reaching thousands of at-home ravers, the Perth's The Velvet Lounge & Studio became driven to use their platform to give back to the local community by raising funds for two important charities.

First up is The Lighthouse For Perth; a mental health charity that offers support for anyone over the age of 12 who may be struggling with their emotions, feeling suicidal or considering self-harm. An extremely vital organisation that, again, has felt ever more valuable during the pandemic where the figures of those in need of mental health support and have reached crisis point have soared. The life-saving work of the Lighthouse For Perth is solely funded by donations and fundraising.

The other half of all donations raised will go to Perth & Kinross Foodbank. A lifeline to many Perth residents in their time of need. The dedicated team of staff and volunteers process, prepare and distribute emergency food supplies to those who would simply go without otherwise. After the turbulent year that 2020 sprung upon us, many more families and friends have found themselves using foodbanks. Half of all funds raised from the Velvet Sessions live stream will go to Perth & Kinross Foodbank - your donation, no matter the amount, could be the difference between someone going hungry this Christmas, or not.

Livestream Lineup:

In return for supporting The Velvet Lounge & Studio’s charity mission, you’ll be supplied with a fantastic evening from some of Perth’s finest electronic talent.

Groovement, Voyage and DJCJ will all return after absolutely tearing up the decks at the last Velvet Sessions stream. Whilst renowned record label and DJ duo Craigie Knowes make their debut appearance in the studio with what promises to be a stellar closing set.

A fresh face in the Scottish electronic scene, DJCJ has already released on a number of respected labels including West End Communications, Craigie Knowes and Hilltown Disco. Stepping in last minute to join Velvet Sessions #1 Craig Johnston stunned us with his fine selection of Lo-fi beats, acid house and more. You can give his latest release Make Of The Geez a spin here.

Respected DJ and promoter Connor Macdonald of Voyage can always be counted on to bring fine selections of pumping house and techno whilst behind the decks. Recently launching his new alias Hen Broon, Connor has been experimenting with new music and getting those creative juices flowing which is sure to come through when he goes live in the studio. You can catch his set from the last Velvet Sessions on Soundcloud here.

Perth’s beloved Groovement will be returning to the line-up once again. A local collective known for its top clubs nights down at Ice Factory Perth headed up by local DJs Mark Mackinnon & Mike Smith, who spun a few tunes at Velvet Sessions #1. Known for mixing feel-good, high-energy house and techno infused with electro Groovement have never been ones to shy away from delivering on the decks. You can watch their set from the last livestream here on their Facebook page.

Renowned label and DJ duo Craigie Knowes will be closing the night. Trailblazers Max Spittal and Mitch Hunter have recently returned to the fair city to run their internationally recognised label which has spent years nurturing and supporting the underground electronic music scene. Both excellent DJs in their respective right, who would normally be found gigging around the globe pre-pandemic, will be spinning a diverse selection of electronic music soaked in attitude at The Velvet Sessions #2. A set which is guaranteed to be highly-anticipated by both locals and those further afield. For a taste of what is to come, you can listen to their most recent set for RinseFM here.

With this unmissable line-up on offer, Velvet Sessions #2 promises to be better than any Christmas office party you might be missing out on!

Choosing two charities very close to the hearts of studio owners Jo Dargie and Hollie Irvine and all of the DJs involved. All that is asked of those who tune into the live stream is that ‘you enjoy the music, dance around the living room, and if within your means, spare a few quid to supporting these vital local charities.’ - Jo Dargie, Co-Owner

Fastly becoming known as a hub for creativity in Perth and beyond. The Velvet Lounge & Studio’s hit stream series Velvet Sessions is focused on giving local artists a platform to share their music.

Hollie Irvine, Co-Founder of The Velvet Lounge & Studio said: “We have pulled out all the stops for this live stream once again and we’re doing so to raise money for two incredible local charities. We knew we needed to support a local mental health charity and with The Lighthouse For Perth being a crisis support group their resources and facilities are needed in Perth now more than ever. This year has been incredibly tough for so many people and we cannot afford to lose any more lives. Mental health across the board is at its worst right now and a lot of people would not have managed this year without the support of organisations like this. It’s incredibly important we continue to fund and raise awareness not only to eradicate the stigma that is attached to poor mental health but to show people there’s places they can turn to when they need it.

Donating to the foodbank alongside that was also very important. Poverty comes in all shapes and sizes and I think people are drastically unaware of how many locals go without. Whether it’s going hungry throughout high school just to save up your dinner money for the weekends to kids in our schemes, on our doorsteps, living off crisps and biscuits. Again, if we can even raise awareness over Christmas that there is no stigma attached to using the foodbank services this would be amazing. We are also urging anyone who may have extra this year to take food down if they can afford to do so.

This one is extremely personal for myself, Jo and everyone who is involved in the night. Be it through knowing someone who has needed to use these services or having had to deal with these issues ourselves.”
