At first sight Candleriggs in Glasgow and Severance Hall in Cleveland, Ohio have little in common. Unless you consider Yann Ghiro. One would have thought that being principal clarinet of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra might be enough to keep this French clarinettist occupied. But no! From 2017 to 2019 he was principal Bass Clarinet of the Cleveland Orchestra. A member of the 'big 5' American Orchestras with Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia and New York Philharmonic Orchestras, the Cleveland is, for some, the finest of them all and has, under its music director Franz Welser-Möst maintained a stellar reputation. While a look at Expedia yields a journey time of 17 hours minimum Yann clearly thought that it was worth it to play in one of the world's truly great ensembles. The schedule in the end got the better of him(!), but just have a listen to what this orchestra can do and you will understand why he tried.
