Day 23 - Bach’s St Matthew Passion

The title of ‘the greatest piece of music ever written’ is of course absurd, but Bach’s St Matthew Passion would have to be a serious contender. An opera in all but name and indeed staged on a number of occasions it includes dramatic choruses and impassioned arias. If I absolutely had to choose one track in all music it would be the aria ‘erbarme dich’ (Have pity on me) sung after Peter has disowned Christ for the third time.

The following clip is of Michael Chance singing this astonishing aria:

If you want to investigate further the following is a really beautiful performance directed by Philippe Herreweghe who, for me is the ultimate Bach interpreter.

Michael Chance

Michael Chance has established a worldwide reputation as one of the foremost exponents of the male alto voice in all areas of the classical repertoire, and is in equal demand as an opera, concert and recording artist.
