Today is the end of an era as Bandwagon Musical Supplies in St Paul's Square, the last music shop in Perth, will close its doors for the final time. Ian McLaren, a long-time bandmate of Bandwagon's indefatigable owner Pete Caban, has written a poignant song to mark this sad occasion.
"I suppose the day had to come that ,after 42 years selling musical instruments in Perth, I would finally hang up my business hat and retire into the unknown. Not an easy decision to make but certain circumstances ,not least this current pandemic, have narrowed down my options.
Four decades of fond memories which I'm sure many of you out there will have shared. A heartfelt thanks to all the customers ,and especially all my regulars who have become my friends (you know who you are), for all your support over the years.
Thanks to all the guys who have assisted me along the way. To Tess and Adam for your loyal service. To all the teachers, sound engineers and part-time staff.. Steve, Owen, Ross, Will, Keith, Jimmy, Kev, Graham, Dave, Chic, Steve D.C, Nick.. (I apologise if I missed anyone). I'll surely miss all the banter but hopefully I'll still bump into some of you as I float about in the outside world.. Maybe even see you at a gig!?
Whether or not there will continue to be a specialist music shop in Perth is anybody's guess., but if anyone fancies the idea I will be happy to help. My plan is to turn the key at the end of August. I still have some stuff to sell so please feel free to fill your boots....I'll be kind!"
