Day 164 - Scotland's Supreme Accompanist
Malcolm Martineau is probably the world's most in demand accompanist. He has become a musical institution (in a good way) I must plead a bit of bias here in that we are close friends and he and I performed Schubert Song Cycles together before I became a failed baritone and he became a world-famous musician! He was one of the first to spot a promising young baritone called Bryn Terfe.l. He has worked with all the great singers of the last 30 years including Susan Graham, Felicity Lott, Thomas Allen, Barbara Bonney, Anne Sofie von Otter, Ian Bostridge, Simon Keenlyside and Florian Boesch. The Americans' description of an accompanist as 'Creative Pianist in Association' could have been written for Malcom. As well as being an amazing coach for singers he is often asked to programme and curate song series in the world's major venues such as the Wigmore Hall. Most recently he can be seen online in performances from the Edinburgh International Festival's Ghost Lights festival which tries to keep the festival spirit alive in these challenging times.
