Day 130 - Southern Fried Stories: Gretchen Peters
To mark the week when Southern Fried, Perth's Festival Of American Roots Music would have taken place, we're featuring some key artists who have a special relationship with the festival. First up is Gretchen Peters, one of the finest songwriters alive in our opinion, and who has performed at the festival 3 times. For Southern Fried 2018, we paired her with the Southern Fried String Quartet, led and arranged by Patsy Reid for an unforgettable show. Gretchen enjoyed it so much she toured with the quartet in 2019, from which this video is taken.
"My love affair with Scotland started in 1997 with my first gig there in King Tut’s.. The audiences have always been brilliant - 100% present, enthusiastic and fully committed - even in the beginning, when I was playing to 50 people. But one of my favorite shows ever (in any country) was our headline set at the Southern Fried Festival in 2018, where we performed a set of songs with the Southern Fried String Quartet. For Barry Walsh and me, playing to a full house at Perth Concert Hall surrounded by the warm embrace of Patsy Reid, Seonaid Aitken, Kristan Harvey and Alice Allen’s strings was a sublime musical experience. I’m forever grateful to Andy Shearer and the Southern Fried Festival for introducing us to these brilliant musicians and planting the seed of what would become my 2019 Strings Attached tour across the UK. Watching this video brought it all back to me, and in the midst of our global pandemic, I’m both grateful for the music we made, and longing for the day when we can do it all again."
