You would think it enough to be one of the world's leading pianists with a stellar recording, recital and concerto career (still trying to get him to Perth!). You would think it even more impressive to be a distinguished composer of instrumental and orchestral music. But add into that the ability to write beautifully about music and life both practical and spiritual, and Stephen Hough becomes almost too good to be true. His latest book, 'Rough Ideas' is an utterly charming collecting of thoughts scribbled down in airports, restaurants and hotel rooms musing on all aspects of the performer's life. I bought it at the beginning of lockdown and it is absolutely the perfect bedside reader. A chapter before sleep and the world feels just a little bit better for some time in the company of this utterly delightful man.
