I Will Always Love You - Alfreda McCrary with Della Mae, Signy Jakobsdottir and Mhairi Hall.
A great memory from our all-female Because We’re Women: The Songs Of Dolly Parton concert which we put together for Southern Fried Festival in 2015. The amazing Alfreda McCrary of Nashville gospel family The McCrary Sisters took on I Will Always Love You and out-Whitneyed Whitney, deservedly winning a standing ovation from a packed audience and fellow performers alike. And, Happy Birthday to Alfreda for Sunday 29 March!
Alfreda, Ann, Deborah and Regina McCrary were steeped in music from an early age and have sung all their lives. These Nashville Sisters have long been the go-to gospel and backing vocalists in Music City and have sung with Dr John, Bob Dylan, The Mavericks, Solomon Burke, Patty Griffin, Bonnie Prince Billy and a host of other top-tier roots, soul, gospel, Americana, rock and pop artists.
They only began singing together - and writing superb original songs – as The McCrary Sisters in the last few years, fulfilling a long-held wish of their late father, a preacher and lynchpin of the legendary gospel quartet The Fairfield Four for several decades. As well as drawing on their deep church heritage, their hugely uplifting sound embraces soul, blues and funk in a live show that is completely inclusive and truly life-affirming.
