Day 116 - The Bassoon - Making the old Gruntbox sing!
The much missed Music Critic of the Glasgow Herald once described the playing of a gifted principal bassoonist of the SCO in the terms described above! The most recent incumbent of that post, Peter Whelan is a star. Not just a fabulous modern bassoonist, he is also a world class exponent of the baroque bassoon. He founded the exciting baroque group Ensemble Marsyas which records for Linn Records and holds a residency at the Wigmore Hall. Peter is now pursuing a new career as a conductor and has taken his thrilling vision to Irish National Opera who are producing wonderful online material to keep audiences supplied with fresh operatic content. If there can be highlights of lockdown, for me they have been Peter's multitrack bassoon, harpsichord and voice versions of Bach arias. I simply challenge you not to smile after this!
