Day 42 - A great conductor but a very difficult man!

Updated: May 1

Fame came late to Guenter Wand and the more famous he got the more absurd his demands became. I think he had a sense of humour and went home to his wife at the end of the day saying ‘you’ll never guess what they have agreed to now’ Perhaps my favourite was his insistence that his wife be able to cook breakfast in his room at the Sheraton on a small stove – the Wands brought the German bacon and the hotel provided the eggs. Also I was once accused of trying to kill him with the air conditioning system at the Usher Hall – which didn’t exist! He was also probably the greatest Bruckner interpreter ever. Enjoy Bruckner 7 with the Berlin Philharmonic recorded when he was nearly 90.
